Gamified Illustrator and Photoshop Files That Teach Basics
To create scaffolding and ease students into the program's overwhelming interface, I gamified Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop by creating interactive digital art pieces that bring learners into the zone of proximal development. Each file includes instructions on how to interact with it. And as you complete each step, another set of instructions is revealed. Within this scaffolding, students are able to learn new tools step by step as they discover new clues to solve the mystery. Each puzzle contains a high-quality art piece meant to show the possibilities of Illustrator and Photoshop.

Studio Lighting Patterns
In this session I will teach digital photography teachers how to create different studio lighting patterns. This is a hands-on session where they will be working with various light sources to create the patterns they see. I will also give access to last year's "Studio Lighting on a Budget" session, wherein I gave helpful hints on what teachers can use to teach lighting even if they don't have access to a studio. This session includes the worksheets, lesson plan and project ideas.

The Arts and CTE: Establishing a Creative Workforce
The arts play a major role in the development of critical thinking skills, communication, leadership, problem solving, decision-making and collaboration. A large number of students are driven to the arts, and the number of pathways in the arts keeps growing, especially in media arts, video and film production, graphic design, and A/V communications. There is a connection between the arts and CTE to provide students with a well-rounded education. Therefore, creating CTE pathways in the arts is key to establishing the creative workforce of the future.

Supporting Neurodiverse Students in CTE
The number of students and colleagues who are under the neurodiversity umbrella is growing. Not all students are diagnosed or have IEP support. As CTE educators, we can learn more about how neurodiverse brains process information and environment and how we can support them to be successful in our classes and workplaces. You do not have to roll the dice to see what works, there are proven techniques already available. Learn what the neurodiversity categories are and basic changes that can be made to increase students' learning and belonging in CTE classrooms and school environments.

Creating a Successful Electrical Program
Let's discuss what it takes to create a successful electrical program. It takes years to become a good electrician, but like everything out there, it begins with a solid foundation. The foundation begins with us. Together we'll explore the skills and academics a young person should have that will make them a desirable apprenticeship candidate. Our trade is vast and we can't teach it all, but we can lay down the foundation for future successes. I will share with you the things that I do, to help you create an exciting learning environment for your future apprentices.

How To Implement and Deploy a High School Drone Program
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) estimates there are approximately 244,568 certified drone pilots in the U.S. The FAA estimates the need for drone pilots will grow to 360,000 within a few years. The North Carolina drone technology courses provide the students with basic background information needed in the drone field while preparing them for both FAA Part 107 Certification and teaching them to fly. Applications in drone mapping, flight processes and entrepreneurship at the second level provide the student with industry-specific skills needed for success in this high-demand field. This workshop covers details on the curricula for all three levels of our drone piloting courses, including teacher requirements, equipment resources, and setting up these programs to meet local, state, and federal requirements. This is the sixth year of our program, and lessons learned and enhancements will be included in the presentation.

Teaching Students Who Learn With Their Hands
Some people learn better with their hands. We cannot underestimate the importance of teaching skilled trades in schools. This course aims to illuminate the critical role that skilled trades play in our society, economy and classrooms. We hope to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications. In this class we will build a model of a roof system and discuss how to scale skilled trades curricula down to fit within budget and room constraints.

The Value of an OSHA Outreach Training Program for CTE
How many American workers really know what their rights are under the Occupational Safety and Health Act? How many American workers are aware of the hazards that exist in their specific trade or technology prior to starting their career? How many American workers know how to protect themselves and their co-workers from job site hazards, or have experience engaging with an employer to take corrective action when they recognize a hazard? Our goal is to share how school districts and unions are collaborating to create self-sustaining OSHA outreach training programs, how students are benefiting from in-person hands-on OSHA training and how this affects the entire workforce in a positive way, and how teachers are walking away with new knowledge, assessing their workspaces, and facilitating OSHA 10 and 30-hour classes catered to their students’ career paths.

Engaging Learners to Develop Effective Recruitment Communications and Systems
Building effective recruitment and program communications is about more than catchy phrases and bright colors. Ensuring that Career Technical Education (CTE) program and recruitment communications are resonating with learners and families, especially those who are underrepresented in CTE programs, requires actively including learners in the development of recruitment and program communications and systems. In this interactive session, participants will explore a new easy-to-use communications, knowledge-building, and action-planning tool from Advance CTE designed to empower CTE leaders at all levels to engage learners and develop recruitment communications that drive behavior and opinion change. Participants will also explore use-case state and local examples highlighting how engaging learners in recruitment communications and systems has made a positive impact.

Retention & Restorative Practices: Holding Students Accountable While Embracing Second Chances
The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth. -African Proverb
In response to an increase in student discipline linked to vape usage, we initiated a transformative program rooted in the belief that every student deserves a chance at redemption. Embracing restorative practices, our program targets students facing expulsion to foster long-term positive outcomes. Through this initiative, we instill a sense of ownership for their choices while offering a supportive environment. Our goal is to empower students to make positive decisions and embrace opportunities for growth and development. Speaker(s): Marni Durham

Using Performance Rubrics to Elevate CTE Student Thinking and Problem Solving
CTE teachers identify successful students by observing their performance and inquiring about their work. But when employers indicate they seek workers who can think critically and solve problems, how can teachers effectively judge thinking as a performance? Critical thinking and problem solving can be addressed by introducing academic standards and designing experiences for students to demonstrate proficiency. Evaluation of these standards is not done using academic style, multiple choice tests or written assignments. In this session, learn how to develop student thinking performance by selecting appropriate academic standards and developing rubrics that give students feedback on developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Co-Creating Community Agreements to Design Equitable Classrooms and Learning Communities
Learning environments are often created without the input or experience of the people they are intended to serve, so they fail to address very real needs. Co-creating community agreements is a culturally responsive and restorative practice that gives voice to all learning community members. In this immersive session, you will learn about co-creating community agreements and then build a plan to bring community agreements home to engage with youth, colleagues and other key community members. Leave prepared to implement this practice back home, energized with new tools, and more confident about advancing equity through innovation.

Motivational Influences of Nontraditional Career Seekers
Maybe you should fly a jet. Maybe you should be a vet. Dr. Seuss emphasized nontraditional occupations more than 40 years ago! But so much has changed. This interactive session details the results of a comparative study on the motivational influences of nontraditional career seekers in Wisconsin and Norway. Topics for this session include the impact of stereotypes on career choice, real and perceived barriers to entering a nontraditional occupation, and what can schools do to incentivize youth into nontraditional career pathways. Also, this session seeks to understand what impact nontraditional gender roles have on secondary students today.

Multilingual Learners: Enhancing School Culture and Reducing Dropout Rates
This presentation delves into enhancing the engagement of Former English Learners (FELs) through a robust program aiming to reduce dropout rates. We will offer insights into overcoming challenges, lessons learned, and our achievements by exploring methods that cultivate opportunities for FELs to co-create the process of monitoring their academics, mentoring incoming students, contributing to professional development, and ensuring their voices are heard. This presentation holds relevance today due to the concerning dropout rates among FEL students nationwide and the program's goal is to establish a platform that engages students and the broader school community in the learning process.

Supporting Special Populations in CTE Through Universal Design for Learning
“Empowering Every Learner: Universal Design for Learning Across CTE Content Areas,” a free digital and print resource, explores strategies for incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) across CTE content areas and within various learning contexts. It contains specific examples for the 16 Career Clusters and provides strategies for immediate implementation in specific CTE pathways. This guide is transformative in meeting students where they are, instead of a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Through guided practice, small- and large-group discussions, and meaningful thought exchanges, participants will explore how this resource can enhance their teaching as well as their students’ learning.

Postsecondary Opportunities: It is Not One Size Fits All
Students of CTE are afforded many opportunities when they graduate high school, but society is still pushing the belief that a Bachelor’s degree is the only measure of success. As educators, it is up to us to inform our students and their families of all the opportunities available. This session will walk you through setting up both an in-person and virtual junior/senior event to meet the needs of all students in any pathway. When your college fair meets your career fair and more while building engaging activities for students.

Artificial Intelligence in the FCS Classroom: The Future Awaits
In his book "AI for Educators," Matt Miller emphasized the necessity of preparing students for a future driven by artificial intelligence (AI). He wrote, "If AI is going to change the world in the near future, we need to prepare our students for that world." What lies ahead for our students in the workforce? And how are we currently equipping them in the classroom? Technology and AI can enhance learning experiences, in addition to offering the invaluable resource of time, particularly for educators. This workshop will explore responsible AI integration into family and consumer sciences (FCS) to better prepare students for the future.

Career Readiness for Tomorrow: Professional Skills in an AI World
This session focuses on the latest research and resources to help teachers know which career-ready skills will be useful to their students in a quickly changing job landscape. We will discuss the skills and behaviors that will benefit students most in a world of technology and Artificial Intelligence. We want teachers to feel confident in their plan to address two primary questions that are quite popular these days: 1) “will Artificial Intelligence replace X job?”, and 2) “How do students prepare for jobs that don’t exist yet.” While it would take some future-telling to get specific answers to those questions, we have compiled research and sought out expert opinions from the field to best prepare students for successful careers that will outlive technological change. We will focus on the aspects of jobs that will always require a uniquely human approach, including: critical thinking, teamwork, professional communication, and project management skills. This session will also include a brainstorm section where attendees will collaborate and compare what they have seen in their classrooms in terms of professional skills in need of development, and we will collect and share best practices for providing students opportunities to practice in class.

Deeper Learning Through CTE and Academic Integration
It is time for academic subject teachers and CTE teachers to break down silos and work together to support students. The best way to build a schoolwide curriculum that prepares students for a challenging world beyond high school is to connect academic courses and CTE. This convergence helps students improve performance and transition to postsecondary education and careers. There are many options for creating teacher collaboration. High school leaders must consider not whether to connect academic and technical skills but which collaboration model works best with existing staff and school organization. ACTE has joined the presenters in publishing a resource describing 17 models of successful examples to stimulate thinking about adding relevance to academics and more thinking skills to career and technical education. This session will describe why CTE academic integration is essential and discuss existing models.

Introduction to CYBER.org’s Cyber Society
The modules in Cyber Society are designed to enable teachers to use liberal arts concepts and ideas as an approach to increase cyber awareness among upper middle school and high school students. The lessons within each customizable module improve students’ critical thinking and critical reading skills. We will be exploring a Cyber Society lesson from the Analysis and Investigation of Cyber Scenarios, wherein students are dropped into the role of federal agents tasked with solving complex scenarios. Educators in attendance will be immersed in a real-world scenario, given fragmentary information, and asked to come up with a solution.
