Engineering Explosive Growth in Retention, Performance & Community Partnerships - TFS Results (Additional Fee Required)
The world has changed. To thrive today, young people need a dynamic competitive advantage in their education and career journey. And yet in this shifting landscape, it’s more challenging than ever to engage, retain, and graduate students. We must adapt our models for this new normal—and in this exciting workshop, performance expert and bestselling author Mark C. Perna will show you how. You’ll experience the latest tools, tactics, and truths to attract and retain more of the right students, in the right programs, for the right reasons. With Mark’s insights, you’ll craft a dynamic narrative to change the way people think about education. Young people need their education to deliver the single most important competitive advantage in the modern workforce: the unstoppable synergy of academic knowledge, technical competency, and professional skills. And they need to know that in all three of these areas, your organization delivers. This is your opportunity to tell that story like it’s never been told before—making CTE the most sought-after piece of the education puzzle. Amid all the upheaval, there has never been a better moment to shift the paradigm with all stakeholders in your community: students, parents, community leaders, legislators, boards, districts, and others. Mark will lay out a clear and actionable vision to unify these diverse groups around a shared goal—to make students career ready, period. Start forging a deeper human connection with students by connecting, engaging, and answering why. Mark delivers key insights on how the younger generations think, what makes them tick, and how they make decisions. By understanding what motivates young people, you can show them why education matters, help them set goals, and inspire them to achieve at a higher level. Finally, Mark will recharge your professional passion by showing the truly profound difference you can make every day. At this critical inflection point in education, we must pivot our narrative to deliver a dynamic message focused on the power of CTE. Your organization already delivers incredible value; now we need to reframe that value to win the hearts and minds of students, parents, and the community. Across North America, countless K–12, career center, and college administrators, teachers, and critical support staff members are using Mark’s nationally acclaimed best practices to spread the word, optimize their results, and significantly increase program completers. Now, it’s your turn. Get noticed by students, parents, and communities—and start engineering explosive growth in a world changing every day! Speaker(s): Mark Perna

CTE Advocacy
Annually in Michigan two events take place to engage legislators in a deep discussion around CTE as a critical part of workforce development in our state. One event legislators are invited to is CTE Advocacy Day where CTE directors meet with representatives and senators to discuss local needs and issues. They have the opportunity to participate as a whole in conjunction with the state leadership around funding and legislation. The second event is the CTE Showcase. This is a daylong event at the Michigan Capitol Building that provides an opportunity for CTE students from all over the state to "show and tell" the significance of CTE in their lives. State officials, legislators, legislative staff, Capitol employees, Michigan Department of Education all receive special invites to the meet and greet event. As a result of these two events, we have seen an increased understanding of CTE.

Demystifying Credentials of Value: Cross-state Themes in IT & Health Care
Identifying credentials of value can feel like an exercise in futility. Getting to "the list" at each state or even local community is wrought with obstacles and requires stakeholder engagement to generate, verify, and finalize. Leaders find themselves asking why it has to be so hard and whether or not anyone else has the answer. State and local leaders shouldn''t feel siloed in their approach. Enough states are tackling credentials of value, especially given their role in Perkins V program quality indicators, that we can look across states to see where there are consistent themes in credentials that can and should be a part of "the list," curriculum decisions, and early postsecondary agreements. Learn how data generated from six states and local communities can help demystify credentials in IT and health care.

NextLevel Fellow - Creating the Dream Team
It’s hard to find great faculty and sometimes harder to retain them. In this session, 2022 NextLevel Leadership Fellow and Program Director at Northern Virginia Community College, JoAnna Collins, will discuss her plan to create an Effective, Change-focused, Student-centered team environment where members are well-supported in their faculty role and valued for their talents and experiences to positively impact student success resulting in faculty satisfaction and retention. As the Former CEO of the Xerox corporation put it, “Employees are a company's greatest asset--they’re your competitive advantage. You want to attract and retain the best; Provide them with encouragement, stimulus, and make them feel that they are an integral part of the company's mission.”-Anne M. Mulcahy. Come discuss ways to help your faculty take ownership and increase investment in their position.

EMS Education for the High School Student
Presentation will focus upon the tremendous advantages CTE high school students receive through one of the most rewarding and demanding occupations. With emphasis on hands-on, scenario-based exercises to provide "real-world" experience and study, students learn aspects of emergency medical services (EMS) often limited in the private education adult sector. With an expanded program of two years, students can meet and exceed standards set by certifying agencies that allow immediate inclusion into the EMS profession.

Hamstring Injuries: Prevention, Diagnosis and Healing
Hamstring injuries are the most common injury in sports, and the number of injuries per year increases every year. Understanding how to reduce the risk of these injuries plays an important part of an athlete''s life. Session attendees will be fully immersed in a hands-on teaching method that brings the intricacies of human anatomy to life in the classroom. Using rigid skeletons and modeling clay, participants will engage in the construction of the muscle group that is collectively referred to as the hamstrings. This three dimensional teaching method introduces STEAM into the anatomy classroom and increases student interest and understanding.

Maximize Our Health Care Talent Pipeline with Career Technical Education
In May 2021, 88% of health care leaders reported difficulty in recruiting medical assistants (poll completed by the Medical Group Management Association). Industry leaders are citing several factors for these difficulties, including stressors from the pandemic and a new scope of practices during the public health emergency, creating an enhanced demand. CTE students are the future leaders of the health care industry, but they can also serve in the most vital front-line roles now. More than half (56%) of CTE candidates want to immediately get to work in the health care field, either solely working or in conjunction with postsecondary goals. In this session, learn best practices from CTE health science programs that have implemented certifications. Gain insights on how to identify the best certifications for your program, the steps to help your students prepare, and how to create curriculum that aligns with the workforce demands.

How Data Can Tell Your Story in Multi-college Initiatives
In 2014, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) put forth its first outcomes-based public policy agenda, Our Louisiana 2020. This initiative established six stretch goals in response to statewide workforce demand: (1) Double the number of graduates; (2) Double graduates’ first-year wages; (3) Quadruple student transfers; (4) Double students served; (5) Quadruple business and industry partnerships; and (6) Double colleges’ foundation assets. Louisiana’s Community and Technical Colleges adapted to the challenge while creating new cultures. One of the most significant was a multi-layered focus on data processes. This presentation will share the story of how this initiative inspired new scalable and sustainable best practices, especially in the institutional research and data arenas. These best practices served the Our Louisiana 2020 initiative and set a foundation for LCTCS’s new initiative, Reaching Equitable Prosperity.

Immigrant Inclusion in CTE and Apprenticeship Programs (IAED)
Employers are currently facing significant talent recruitment and retention challenges. CTE and work-based learning (WBL) programs present a unique opportunity to develop internal talent pools, with significant return on investment for the employer and the employee alike. In this session you will learn about how EnGen has partnered with educational providers and employers to implement English language pre-apprenticeship programs. And we will explore examples of how forward-thinking employers are developing internal talent pools from within their diverse and evolving workforce. This session will include the discussion of "earn and learn" training programs and pre-apprenticeship models that are expanding into new sectors and career pathways. Workplace and work-based learning opportunities have a significant impact on inclusion, access, equity, and diversity (IAED) initiatives. Participants will come away from this session with new strategies and best practices for using technology and innovation within workplace English and WBL programs, as well as an understanding of how to effectively build multi-stakeholder partnerships.

Advancing CTE Without Limits: Equity in Action
Advance CTE launched CTE Without Limits, a bold, ambitious and forward looking vision that puts equity at its core. This vision calls for the nation to establish a CTE, education and workforce system that works for each learner, wherever they are in their career journey and whatever their background. To support state and local leaders in reimagining a more cohesive, flexible and responsive career preparation ecosystem for all learners, with CTE at its nexus, Advance CTE released the Pushing the Limits Roadmap, a step-by-step implementation guide and resource. Participants will gain knowledge about the foundational elements of CTE Without Limits and the Vision Roadmap and how states have leveraged technical assistance and the Vision to identify gaps in equity, access and inclusion and are working to diagnose and address institutional and systemic barriers to equity to ensure that every learner has limitless opportunity to economic mobility and prosperity.

Developing the Next Generation of Tech Center Leaders
This session will share early findings from a U.S. Department of Education (IES) supported study to develop and pilot test a new intervention focused on improving the design and delivery of professional learning for directors of regional technology centers. Center directors have a complex job managing learning, facilities, budgets, relations with sending school districts, community and technical colleges, business and industry and labor market alignment; and of course, accountability. The approach being tested includes extensive and ongoing needs assessment, an iterative process built around on-site learning and coaching, professional learning communities, and building a community of practice. Early findings will be shared along with updates in the development process.

Our Journey to Embedding Inclusion, Access, Equity and Diversity (IAED)
From storytelling to strategy, during the last three years, Butler Tech has embarked on an authentic journey to embed the work of IAED. We have taken risks, leaned into courageous conversations, and stopped and started various initiatives to create a more intentionally inclusive space for staff, students, and the broader community. Many of these strategies have failed, while others flourished. We are a work in a progress as a district, and we are committed to the courageous journey of honoring all stakeholders, while undoing systemic practices that need overhauled in schools. Come hear our story.

Maladies such as tech/text neck were unknown 25 years ago. But today, as many as 58% of American adults experience some form of technology-related neck pain. Session attendees will be fully immersed in a hands-on teaching method that brings the intricacies of human anatomy to life in the classroom. Using rigid skeletons and modeling clay, participants will engage in the construction of three neck muscles most affected by tech neck. This 3D teaching method introduces STEAM into the anatomy classroom and increases student interest and understanding in health science careers.

Teaching Generation G: Using Gamification To Drive Learner Engagement
Presented by Ian Jukes, international speaker/author & Nai Wang Ed Tech Entrepreneur. Driven by the global pandemic, powerful digital technologies are exposing us to compelling multimedia learning experiences—experiences that have fundamentally changed how we process and use information. No one has been more affected by this than Generation G, the Gamer Generation.
This session asks why video games like Fortnite and Roblox are so compellingly addictive while, at the same time, Gen G is increasingly losing interest in learning, even though billions of dollars have been spent on installing and implementing digital learning solutions. The answer is simple: It’s because educational solution providers don’t understand the power of gamification. Presenters Nai Wang and Ian Jukes will outline how the minds of gamers work, what motivates them, and how video games can use incremental growth, rewards, achievements, and peer engagement to keep learners engaged. What strategies can we adopt to help Gen G sift through information overload while, at the same time, allowing them to retain what they’ve learned in the classroom…and what does this development mean for the future of teaching, learning, and assessment? An extensive digital library of resources will be available for attendees. Speaker(s): Nai Wang Ian Jukes

Building Employer Partnerships for Student Success in the Global Economy
To take advantage of global market opportunities, companies want employees with the knowledge and skills to work across cultures. International skills and expertise will be critical to assist students in not only getting jobs, but in being able to move up the career ladder. Engaging work-based learning (WBL) experiences that allow students to take part in the diverse workforce and to see the interdependence of the global marketplace are the best way to develop these skills. This session will provide an overview of how interconnected we are with the global economy and will focus on key strategies and approaches to engage industry partners to ensure global workplace readiness. Free tools and resources will be shared. Appropriate for both secondary and postsecondary educators.

Learn, Shoot, Edit
My session will help photography, audio visual, and digital art teachers combine their lectures with fun and engaging labs. Because our certification is around Adobe Photoshop (PS), most instructors give tutorials in PS, but they often don''t include it as part of the lesson and lab. My session would teach instructors how to flow from the lesson into a unique and engaging lab with a new edit for each. It will also help identify a flow that builds on students'' previous knowlege from one lesson to the next in a logical way.

Supporting the CTE Teacher Pipeline in Illinois
Session participants will learn innovative program models to develop, grow, and retain high-quality CTE educators. Guided by Illinois ACTE''s mission, “to advance and promote all aspects of career and technical education,” attendees will learn about how we support new CTE teachers through a New Teacher Institute and how to train for specific vocations via the Instructors Apprenticeship. Whether an organization is in its infancy stage or preparing to take a program to scale, you will learn the basis for institutions to transform CTE teacher procurement. This awareness and understanding can serve as a basis for reimagining an institution’s approach to using an organization of resources, structure, and development of programs. Participants will receive a toolkit of resources to aid efforts in recruiting, supporting, growing, and retaining the next-generation pipeline of high-quality CTE educators.

Ace Up Your Sleeve: CTE School-based Administration
Strengthen your hand in growing quality CTE programs with a CTE school-based administrator, a career specialist. This session will explore how participants can build strong programs by outlining the roles and responsibilities of this dedicated position. Focusing the activities of this specialist increases the odds of meeting program goals and makes continuous improvement a sure bet. CTE school-based administrators identify gaps and areas of need. During this forum, we will discuss the ways in which a career specialist leverages the talents and resources of the community to align with those demands. Participants will leave with a very clear plan for launching a career specialist, or similar CTE support role, in a school or district. With a career specialist in your deck, you truly have the ace up your sleeve.

CANCELLED - The Changing Face of Employer Engagement
Employers have always supported CTE to varying degrees, from the minimally involved to the all aboard. Today, however, in light of what has been called The Great Resignation, employer interest in CTE has been ramped up dramatically, with many educators reporting a much greater level of interest as well as a much stronger focus on immediate placement. This is thought to solve crushing workforce needs but does not align with the educational and developmental focus of a true work-based learning (WBL) experience. In this session, Brett Pawlowski, author of the Employer Engagement Toolkit, will talk about changes in the workforce, the importance of maintaining the true spirit and focus of WBL programs; and new and modified strategies for fully engaging employers in ways that work for employers, educators, and students.

Tips for Creating and Implementing a Profile of a Graduate
Creating a graduate profile for your school and community starts to shift the conversation away from academic skills and testing to a more complete picture of what it takes to be ready for success in career and life. That’s CTE educators and administrators should support and be deeply involved in the process. In this session, participants will learn a structured, collaborative process to bring together educators and community partners to create a profile of a graduate, and then to align the K– 12 curriculum with the profile. The presenters will also share local examples of effective graduate profile initiatives and encourage sharing among participants. Using Plans of Instruction for Academic Integration Throughout CTE Courses
Awarding embedded academic core credit does not eliminate experiences in academic core courses but enhances opportunities for students to apply academic core content in CTE. As local/state education agencies and boards of education determine how academic core credit will be granted through participation in CTE programs, several key factors are integral for success. Participants will explore how the Alabama State Department of Education is working with educators to undergo a rigorous curriculum review to identify and showcase the integration of academic core content in CTE. The result is high-quality instructional materials that ensure fidelity to both the academic core content standards and the specific CTE industry standards.

Courageous Leadership - Implementing a Strategic, Community-connected Approach to Transformational Change
UTC South Durham exists to ensure that all of our students are Career and Life Ready. We implement a model of innovative careers and technical education that is not the norm in the UK. The model that we have created is called our Student Leaver Profile (SLP). This session will showcase and detail how a technically and careers focused model of education such as the SLP can have significant impact for its students, the industry whose skills those students fulfil and the wider community. It will focus on the processes, structures and day-to-day practices that we have and continue to implement to make the SLP and our style of education a reality, with the aim of providing actionable ideas and strategies that our audience can take away and implement in their own schools or practice as an individual educator.

Becoming 865 Ready
Participants in this session will learn why the Knox County, TN school system decided to undergo a transformation from good individual schools to a great community-connected school system. Knox County is early in the journey and already garnering support from the private, civic, and non-profit sectors because of intentional planning and communication. Knox County's area code is 865, and this work impacts the entire region covered by the 865 area code; therefore, the academies in Knox are named "The 865 Academies." The students in the academies will be 865 ready.

CTE Ambassadors & Career Development: Peer Education For Middle Schoolers
Peer education has been used extensively with adolescents in regard to modifying behaviors and attitudes from a variety of topics — but rarely when it comes to career pathway development. While there are a few CTE centers that utilize CTE ambassadors to promote and market CTE, even fewer leverage this group as a peer education, leadership model to assist younger students in their career development. This presentation will focus on activities, experiences, and events that CTE ambassadors may conduct as a leadership club. There will be an open discussion about future ideas and concepts to influence effective career decision-making and pathway growth for middle schoolers. There will also be information and materials about how to start your own CTE ambassador organization.

Simulated Workplace — Expanding work-Based Learning Opportunities
Are you having issues with access and equity for work-based learning (WBL)? Change your programs to companies and students to employees. With the Simulated Workplace model, you can make a difference in the application of WBL for all students as they embrace workplace expectations, gain career skills, and obtain program-specific knowledge while serving as an employee of a company in their CTE center. It’s time to change the CTE playbook and reimagine a new learning environment with engaging instruction where students collaborate and actively participate, taking risks and maximizing their chances for success as they enter the world of work.

Engage: A Districtwide Initiative for CTE in Middle School
Middle school participation and engagement in CTE is vital to students'' academic successes and future workforce development. In an effort to redesign the middle school curriculum, Fulton County Schools made CTE in middle school a priority initiative. This led to the development of a brand new CTE course called CTE Engage. This course was created by teachers across eight different career clusters and gives students a hands-on, relevant, and engaging experience that goes beyond traditional career awareness and exposure courses. This course was mandated, by the school board, for all middle school students at 20 schools in our district. We will share with you our journey, stakeholder engagement, curriculum development, strategies for continuous improvement, and student outcomes.

Galvanizing Institutional Buy-in & Support for CTE
Grant-funded programs often come and go. Perkins-funded initiatives rarely reach full sustainability. A key CTE champion retires or gets promoted elsewhere, and our program support falters. We can no longer rely on the support of a few; we must galvanize support across our institutions broadly to ensure true CTE sustainability, support, advocacy, continuity, and growth. Come hear the rise, fall, and resurrection of CTE at one institution as we outline the seven problems (and solutions) of effective institutional change. Learn very specific strategies (that work!) to create a long-lasting, shared understanding in support of CTE at your institution.

Promoting CTE Pathways as An Early Postsecondary Opportunity
With many states focusing on early postsecondary opportunities (EPSO), college courses in high school have seen a rise in enrollment. We must elevate CTE courses so that they are seen as a viable and desirable EPSO, resulting in more students graduating with postsecondary credit and/or industry certifications. We will share the results of a district EPSO analysis and strategies to improve equity and access as well as communication and promotion of opportunities.

Strategic Marketing and Social Media Practices for CTE Organizations
How familiar is your community with CTE? Do they know its meaning, what programs you offer, and how those programs benefit both students and the community? Adequately explaining the qualities of CTE programs and how they deviate from typical classes can be hindered by different obstacles. For one, there is a lack of general awareness and recognition of CTE. Second, there are often misconceptions surrounding CTE due to its vocational training origins. In this session, CTE leaders will learn how education, specifically CTE, is both a product and a service and that hybrid communication strategies can redefine perceptions of CTE while making impactful first impressions. How could these strategies be integrated into your organization? This session will explore an overview of marketing fundamentals, examples of daily practices, and strategy tips that address the blend of a product-service entity. Additionally, this session will address social media practices, ethical media policies, website accessibility, and inclusivity.

Strategies for Effectively Analyzing Data and Creating Visualizations
CTE has a plethora of data. This session will provide attendees with tips for preparing data, analyzing data, and selecting visualizations to best communicate your data to stakeholders. Selecting the most appropriate data for monitoring program performance and tracking improvement is crucial. Further, analyzing data effectively to ensure program equity, access, and diversity is key. Types of data analysis bias and how to avoid them will also be discussed. Creating purposeful visualizations that display data in a way that readers can easily comprehend is also an important part of the data analysis cycle. Learn from one district that embarked upon a data journey and hear about their path, learnings, obstacles, and successes; and see the impact of data visualization.

Core Academics Delivered as a Work- & Project-based Learning Powerhouse
Imagine teaching an Algebra I class through the vehicle of CTE work- and project-based learning where students earn a full math credit and full CTE credit within a given CTE pathway. AMPED on Algebra is the program for you! Join us to learn how we’ve taken the single most failed class on any high school campus, Algebra I, and integrated it with CTE in order to solve underachievement in math and dwindling enrollment in CTE. Transitioning away from simulations of learning, this class is the real deal and the techniques that will be shared are transferable to any core academic and CTE integration program. Leave this session uplifted and inspired to ignite your own classroom with excitement for all.

CTE Music and Audio Technology
To be successful in today’s music industry you need to have a great understanding of the gear and recording tools used by professionals. That means you need to be proficient in production, recording, mixing and mastering. We have a curriculum that prepares you to break into the industry and encourages entrepreneurship. I will be discussing the importance of designing and building real-world professional learning spaces for our students in CTE, specifically in music and audio technology. I will be discussing the importance of exposing students to work-based learning experiences within these beautifully designed spaces. Articulation agreements with colleges and universities are also a critical piece because they will allow students to attain college credits while being part of our CTE program curriculum. Music tech programs are nontraditional but essential.

Digital Badges: Mapping a Student’s Journey to CTE Success
How can students demonstrate success in a career pathway — while showing their own personalstrengths? Digital badges ensure that all students demonstrate acquisition of essential skills, while letting students celebrate their individual successes. In this session, you will learn the three stages of developing digital badges: 1) Schools define the badge requirements: the skills and knowledge required for a career pathway; 2) Students collect evidence — including classroom experiences, internships and other activities to fulfill those requirements; and 3) Teachers approve the student work and award the badge. We will show existing samples of badges that are useful for students, teachers and employers. We''ll also look at the benefits of implementing badges, including tracking work-based learning hours, determining which students are committed to being in a pathway, and generating reports on which students have met the pathway requirements. We will focus on practical strategies that you can apply to your school.

Family & Consumer Sciences Education Division Opening Session - Be Their Hero: Trauma Informed Care
Two out of every three students in the United States are impacted by a traumatic event. When students experience trauma or an extremely stressful situation, it's normal and natural for them to have a hard time coping afterwards. I'm passionate about teaching educators how to support individuals impacted by trauma. I specialize in inspiring teachers that they can support these students and be the hero in their life journey. During this training participants will learn: 1. Learn how many students are impacted by childhood trauma and how to identify them. 2. Learn how the brain and body respond to trauma and how that impacts student behavior. 3. Leave with a ‘Call to Action’ and be equipped with many specific tools that are easy to use to support their students.

Invigorate Curriculum by Integrating Industry Credentialing
Microsoft Office Specialist, Communication Skills for Business, Adobe Certified Professional, Information Technologist Specialist, and Entrepreneurship for Small Business are several credentials that employers are seeking. Industry credentialing is relevant for all levels of education. Business educators must constantly develop curriculum by keeping offerings up to date with changes in technology and other factors that affect employability. More importantly, educators must strive to provide students with the skills that potential employers are seeking in employees. Credentialing is an important approach that can be used for individuals to demonstrate competence in content areas. Attend this session to learn how to facilitate program improvement by ensuring that students and student teachers are prepared with both the content and pedagogical knowledge to use and/or teach credentialing.

Data Center Operations: An Emerging CTE Discipline
Data centers are large, centralized clusters of computing hardware. Enterprise and economic activities that rely on internet services (e.g., cloud-based computing, online commerce, video and audio streaming) require significant data center infrastructure to ensure continuity of services. In order to provide these services, data centers require significant capital investment, ongoing operational maintenance, and the engineering technician workforce capacity to support these. As computing continues to shift toward a cloud-based networked model, the data center industry is slated to grow significantly over the next decade. This panel-based discussion will introduce data center operations as an emerging CTE discipline to help meet the growing demand for skilled workers in this sector. Next-level CTE Classroom Instruction: Learning as Engaging as the Lab
This session could easily be called, "How Not to Lecture." This session empowers attendees with five lessons that demonstrate the most effective ways to deliver content in the classroom that is as engaging and active as the learning students experience in the lab. The lessons shared are each based on key lab attributes: freedom of movement, collaboration, relevance, and student agency. Participants will experience parts of each lesson to internalize how impactful the instructional strategies are firsthand. In a classroom where students feel that school is something done to them, very few emotions are elicited. Classrooms where students are the creators and constructors of meaning on a regular basis, however, have a different feel.

Say Yes to FCS Teaching Camp for High School Students
This presentation highlights the implementation of a summer family and consumer sciences (FCS) teaching camp for underrepresented high school students and its impact on increasing interest in becoming an FCS educator. The summer camp was a partnership between an FCS educator preparation program at a four-year university and a local education agency. The experiential learning experience embedded career development activities and provided high school students with the following experiences: (1) learning engaging teaching strategies to use in developing and teaching various FCS-related lessons; (2) learning from and interacting with guest speakers from education and FCS-related industries who are from varied racial/ethnic backgrounds; and (3) having local industry partners and FCS educators mentor students in developing their teaching lessons. Session attendees will receive resources and guidance to replicate the camp. The camp could be replicated with all areas of CTE with modifications of the focus and camp materials.
